Anita Parrott George
Anita Parrott George grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi. After earning degrees, including a Ph.D., from Alcorn State University, the University of Florida, and Mississippi State University, she embarked on a four-decade career as an educator. In 2002, Mississippi State University honored this career by naming her a Professor Emerita of Curriculum and Instruction.
In addition to her work as a teacher and professor, she has been an activist since young adulthood. When she was a student in 1957, she participated in non-violent protests of racial injustice. She served as the vice-chair of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi (now the Alluvial Collective), a co-chair on the Diocese of Mississippi Task Force on Racial Reconciliation, and the chair of the Executive Council’s Committee on Anti-Racism.
For these endeavors, as well as her service as a seven-time deputy to the General Convention and two-time member of the Executive Council, George was made an honorary canon of the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew in Jackson, Mississippi, in 2019. She remains active in education and advocacy.
